The Crown Estate is the business and property portfolio of the British Crown that comprises over 600 hectares in central London. The estate includes sites such as Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, St James’s Palace, and Kensington Palace.

The estate generates an annual revenue of £2 billion ($2.8 billion). The estate employs over 10,000 people, who provide services such as catering, security, cleaning, and landscaping. The Queen uses the profits from the estate to support charitable causes.

The Crown Estate traces its origins back to the feudal system in England. In the Middle Ages, the land was owned by nobles who granted it to their followers. King John transferred ownership of the crown lands to the English nation in 1216 during his reign. The first mention of the Crown Estate dates back to 1337 when it was referred to as “the King’s Manor.”
